I want to first thank you for your interest in the topic of unwanted hair in young teens. This issue is very personal to me. I am the owner of Bay Harbour Med Spa in Bay Harbour ( Miami Beach est. 1987) and have been an electrologist for over 34 years. I was educated in Europe and had a skin care clinic in the Mediterranean coast for 17 years. In the Mediterranean Region a lot of young women suffer from unwanted facial and body hair. I always treated my clients as if they were family, but it is not until my own daughter was plagued with this problem that I realized how deeply rooted this issue is. Not only is it an aesthetic issue but there are biological and physical ramifications that are far worse.
I was born in Czechoslovakia and it is atypical for women to have hair on their fingers, toes, face, chin, neck, belly or back. However, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean and African-Americans do have unwanted hair. Being that my daughter’s father was Mediterranean I thought it was only normal for her to have this problem to when I started having to wax her at the age of 4. Yes, that’s right, the age of 4.Because I love my daughter so much I never realized how this problem affected her and even drove her to such severe depression that she contemplated suicide because unbeknown to me she was teased in school for years.I was determined to help my child and set out to find a solution. I had waxed her for years and understandably she grew tired of it. It was too painful and the tears would flow down her face because of the unbelievable feelings of despair she felt.I was determined to find a solution once and for all. I had a skin care clinic for years and had researched laser hair removal technologies but none of them impressed me. Some of the manufacturers could not guarantee permanency and the biggest problem of all………. They were not fit for men and women with darker or black toned skin.
My daughter has olive skin and very dark hair. After years of research and waiting I finally found what I was looking for to solve my daughter’s problem once and for all.The laser technology I am speaking of is called CoolGlide and is the only FDA laser technology approved to treat men and women OF ALL SKIN COLORS without causing any discoloration to the skin.I thought that the laser machine was the answer to all of her problems. Little did I know that this endeavor of mine would by default lead me to find out the real problem my daughter and many young girls out there suffer from. The medical community till today ( September, 2008) fails to screen our daughters for some very important tests. As I mentioned my daughter had gained a lot of weight in her teens. She got her period on the day of her 11th birthday. Her periods were extremely heavy and extremely painful. My daughter was prescribed Vicodin to help reduce her cramps. My daughter was hairy, had terrible cramps and heavy periods, she had cysts on her ovaries and had her first operation ( one of many at the age of 15). My daughter is now 32 and it was not until the age of 25 that she was diagnosed with endometriosis ( a reproductive disease that like cancer has 4 stages, but unlike most cancers has no cure). She underwent chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. Her young body had been through so much. Being so in touch with her body, my daughter always knew there was so much more going on with her. She researched and came upon another disease called PCOS ( polycentric ovarian symptom) which encompassed many of her symptoms: excessive body hair also known as Hirsutism, painful and heavy periods also known as Dysmenorrhea, depression, pelvic pain and the cysts that were constantly growing on her ovaries). Her doctors in Miami were not able to diagnose her but it was not until she went to see a specialist in Atlanta, Georgia. My daughter was in so much pain, she was unable to walk and so just like I found the laser technology for her as a stubborn mother I found her savior. His name is Dr. Sinervo and he is the #1 specialist in the United States in Endometriosis. It is not until he opened her up surgically that we found out that her endometriosis had spread to her liver. She had a partial hysterectomy and a part of her liver was cut out. It was also on that day, that my daughter’s suspicion was validated, she had PCOS which was apparent by the hundreds of micro-cysts on her ovaries. We now after many years of research and a handful of doctors telling me my daughter was “ SENSITIVE” that we found out that she had a hormonal imbalance which caused her to be overweight and have hair all over her body. It is now with her permission that I wanted to write about this so that other parents out there who are feeling the despair I felt can educate themselves on how and what the cause is to unwanted hair growth in young teens.
First you should understand the biology of hair.
Different Types of Hair:All hair is made of keratin, a hard protein that’s also found in your fingernails and toenails. Hair growth begins beneath the surface of your skin at a hair root inside a hair follicle, a small tube in the skin. There are two types of hair: Vellus: hair is soft, fine, and short. Most women have vellus hair on their chest, back, and face. It can be darker and more noticeable in some women than others, especially those with darker complexions. Vellus hair helps the body maintain a steady temperature by providing some insulation. The second type of hair is: Terminal: hair is coarser, darker, and longer than vellus hair. It’s the type of hair that grows on your head. Around puberty, terminal hair starts to grow in the armpits and pubic region. On guys, terminal hair begins to grow on the face and other parts of the body such as the chest, legs, and back. Terminal hair is there to provide cushioning and protection.
Your Options for Getting Rid of Hair:
Shaving:
How It Works: Using a razor, a person removes the tip of the hair shaft that has grown out through the skin. Some razors are completely disposable, some have a disposable blade, and some are electric. Guys often shave their faces, and women often shave their underarms, legs, and bikini areas.
How Long It Lasts: 1 to 3 days
Pros: Shaving is fairly inexpensive, and you can do it yourself. All you need is some warm water, a razor, and if you choose, shaving gel or cream.Cons: Razor burn, bumps, nicks, cuts, and ingrown hairs are side effects of shaving. Ingrown hairs can happen with close, frequent shaving. When the hair begins to grow, it grows within the surrounding tissue rather than growing out of the follicle. The hair curls around and starts growing into the skin, irritating it.
How It Works: Using tweezers, a person stretches the skin tightly, grips the hair close to the root, and pulls it out.
How Long It Lasts: Approximately 1-2 WeeksPros: it’s inexpensive.
Cons: Tweezing can be painful, so it’s best to do it only on small areas, such as the eyebrows. If the hair breaks off below the skin, a person may get an ingrown hair. After tweezing, you may notice temporary red bumps because the hair follicle is swollen and irritated.
How It Works: An applicator with wax is spread on the area of skin where the unwanted hair is present. A cloth strip is then applied over the wax and quickly pulled off, pulling the hair from the root. Waxing can be done at a spa or at home.
How Long It Lasts: Up to 3 weeks
Pros: Waxing leaves the area smooth and is long lasting. Hair regrowth looks lighter and less noticeable than it is after other methods of hair removal, such as shaving.
Cons: Many people say the biggest drawback to waxing is the discomfort: My daughter has very sensitive skin and she often complained that it was painful. Because the treatment works by pulling hair out at the roots, it can sting a bit as the hair comes off luckily that part is fast. People may notice temporary redness, inflammation, and bumps after waxing. Multiple treatments over several years are required in order to notice a significant thinning out of the hair.Teens who use acne medications such as tretinoin and isotretinoin may want to skip waxing because those medicines make the skin more sensitive. People with moles or skin irritation from sunburn should also avoid waxing.
How It Works: Over a series of multiple and painful treatments spread out over a number of years, a professional electrologist inserts a needle into the follicle and sends an electric current through the hair root, killing it. A small area such as the upper lip may take a total of 4 to 10 hours and a larger area such as the bikini line may take 8 to 16 hours.
How Long It Lasts: Intended to be permanent, but some people have regrowth of hairPros: Some people have permanent hair removal.
Cons: Electrolysis takes lots of time, so it’s usually only used on smaller areas such as the upper lip, eyebrows, and underarms. Many people describe the process as painful, and dry skin, scabs, scarring, and inflammation may result after treatment. Multiple treatments spread out over a number of years is necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction.
How It Works: A laser beam is directed through the skin to the hair follicle, where it stops growth. It works best on people with dark hair because the melanin (colored pigment) in the hair absorbs more of the light, making treatment more effective.
How Long It Lasts: Permanent after a series of a minimum of 12 treatments spread out between 4-6 weeks.
Pros: TOO MANY TO MENTION….This type of hair removal is long lasting and large areas of skin can be treated at the same time. Relatively painless. Safe and effective.
I am proud to tell you that today my daughter leads a healthy life full of optimism and after multiple laser hair removal treatments my daughter is no longer plagued by unsightly and unwanted hair. It is fundamental to our daughters physical and psychological being that we understand how unwanted hair can cause them feelings of inadequacy and furthermore, that we must have them screened for hormonal and physical diseases such has hypothyroidism, PCOS and Endometriosis.
